Deliberate Practice

Malcolm Gladwell says it takes roughly 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to achieve mastery in a field. I want to see how far one week of deliberate practice will take me.

I’m ready to overcome the fear I have of talking to a camera. I hate not being able to read body language or have someone to bounce ideas off of when I press record. Unlike when I’m talking one on one, it feels like I’m talking into a void and because I’m able to see myself, I nitpick and second-guess everything I say when that red light is flashing on the screen.

I’m going to go about this much more proactively than I have with other skills I’ve learned in the past. My game plan is to start by posting videos to Snapchat and Instagram, just to get something out there. The next step will involve picking the brains of those who have been there before, and finally, I’ll add my own style to what I’m posting.

“First, learn the rules. Next, study the masters. Then, break the rules.” —Julie M. Earl.

I know I can succeed at this, but it will require holding myself accountable. That’s something I’ve done before.
